Making your first captioned call

InnoCaption works just like your phone’s regular dialer. Simply open the InnoCaption app on your smartphone and use the keypad to dial the number you wish to call. Once the call connects, whatever the other person on the line says will be captioned on the screen. If you'd like to see detailed instructions for this process, visit How do I make an outbound call?

Receiving captioned calls

The InnoCaption app will only pick up and caption incoming calls to your new InnoCaption phone number. This means that if you want to have inbound calls captioned you will need to do one of the following:

  1. Have people call your InnoCaption number directly

  2. Have people call your cell phone number (after setting up call forwarding)

By setting up call forwarding with your wireless provider, you can have all calls to your existing cell phone number automatically sent to your InnoCaption number for captioning. Call forwarding is a feature offered by most wireless carriers and instructions on how to do this depends on your specific carrier and device. We have a step-by-step guide for setting up call forwarding for easy reference for our users.

Answering your first call

When you receive a call to your InnoCaption number, you will see a pop-up notification on your device that will prompt you to answer or decline the call. Notifications for incoming calls are going to appear slightly differently whether your device is an iPhone or Android, and will appear differently whether your phone is open or locked. All notifications include a green or blue button to accept the call, and a red button to decline.

Selecting caption modes

InnoCaption offers live captioning through highly skilled stenographers as well as best-in-class automated speech recognition software. InnoCaption puts you in control, allowing you to choose between these two different methods of captioning depending on your accessibility needs and the nature of your call. For more information about our caption modes, please see the article below.

You can select between live stenographer (Human) or automated speech recognition (AI) captioning by tapping on the caption mode button on the bottom left of the Keypad screen when making a call. You can also switch between caption modes during a call using the caption mode button. If your captioning preference is Human, we recommend keeping your default setting to Human with AI fallback enabled. This will ensure that even if all stenographers are busy, your call will still go through.

Using Text-to-speech

Text-to-speech allows you to convert text into speech with natural sounding human voices. It was developed to assist our users who have difficulty being understood by automated systems. Using this feature, our users can type short prompts, such as "Yes" or "Representative," to navigate these systems with greater ease. For more information on this feature, please refer to the article below:

View past call transcripts

Past call transcripts are automatically saved on your device and can be easily accessed by loading the InnoCaption app and going to Recents. There, you will see a list of past calls made through the app and on the right side of each call there is a document icon that you can tap to view the call transcript. You also have the option to email call transcripts to yourself for safekeeping. For detailed instructions on saving your transcripts, you can refer to How to view and save call transcripts.

Please note that to ensure your privacy, call transcripts are not stored on InnoCaption servers. The InnoCaption app deletes old transcripts from your device to make room for newer calls. If there is an important transcript you would like to retain, go to the transcript view screen and use the Transcript Lock button or use the Share button to email it to yourself.

Back up your transcripts

If you delete the InnoCaption app or plan to change devices, please be sure to back up your transcripts to restore them at a later time.

Before deleting the app, we strongly recommend enabling auto backup. If you do not back up your call logs before deleting the app, all of your call transcripts will be deleted permanently. For instructions on how to do this, refer to How do I back up and restore my call transcripts and call history?

Personalize your voicemail

Your new InnoCaption number comes with a visual voicemail service with the ability to preview, listen to, save, or delete messages. The greeting can be customized and any voice messages you access will also be captioned. For instructions on how to do this, refer to How to personalize my InnoCaption voicemail greeting.

For more information and instructions on visual voicemail, please refer to How to check and delete voicemail messages.

InnoCaption Web: View captions on your desktop

InnoCaption Web allows you to make outbound calls and receive incoming calls directly from this web portal. This feature makes video conference calls far more accessible and also helps users who may have difficulty viewing captions on a small phone screen during longer calls.
