Use Text-to-speech (TTS)

Learn how to enable TTS, choose a voice, and use QuickSpeak shortcuts to communicate efficiently during calls.

Updated over a week ago

If you have trouble speaking or being understood on phone calls, InnoCaption's Text-to-speech (TTS) feature can help you communicate by having a natural sounding automated voice speak what you type. By learning how to customize the TTS settings, users are empowered to use InnoCaption as a reliable voice for everyday communication. Customization options include (1) choosing your voice, (2) setting up QuickSpeak buttons, and (3) saving frequently used phrases for faster input when you type.

Customize your Shortcuts

There are two types of Shortcuts within our TTS feature: QuickSpeak and saved Phrases. QuickSpeak phrases are pre-written responses that are immediately spoken when you tap the shortcut during a call. This is helpful when there are repetitive phrases you may need to say quickly on a call, such as "Please repeat that again." On the other hand, saved Phrases are inserted into your TTS input field to be included in a longer sentence or to be manually revised before being spoken. Examples of this might be your address which may take a long time to manually type and may be part of a longer response.

To add or edit a QuickSpeak phrase

  1. Tap Settings

  2. Tap Text-to-speech

  3. Tap Shortcuts

  4. Tap QuickSpeak

  5. Tap Add phrase to add a new QuickSpeak phrase, or tap an existing phrase to edit

  6. Tap Save when finished

Below are three initial default phrases for QuickSpeak, which you can customize based on your preference.

  • Intro: Hi, I'm using a text-to-speech assistant to type my replies. I appreciate your patience.

  • Hold: Please wait while I type my reply.

  • Repeat: Please repeat that again.

Mute mic as default

This TTS setting allows you to have all of your calls start with the mic muted by default. This is for people who primarily use TTS to communicate and do not need to use your own voice. By muting the mic you can eliminate any background noise getting picked up by the mic so the other party only hears what the TTS voice says. The mic can still be unmuted during a call if needed.

To mute the mic at the start of each call

  1. Open the InnoCaption app

  2. Tap Settings

  3. Tap Text-to-speech

  4. Next to Mute mic as default, tap the toggle ON
